Vikram Misri IFS to be the new Foreign Secretary of India, Ministry of External Affairs

Shri Vikram Misri IFS (1989), presently posted as Deputy National Security Advisor – National Security Council Secretariat, is appointed as the new Foreign Secretary – Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, effective July 15, 2024, succeeding Shri Vinay Kwatra IFS (1988).

Born on November 7, 1964, in Srinagar, Shri Misri is a seasoned Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of 1989 batch. He graduated with a degree in History from Hindu College, University of Delhi, and later pursued MBA from XLRI, Jamshedpur. He has served as private secretary to three prime ministers Narendra Modi, Manmohan Singh, and Inder Kumar Gujral. He is renowned for his expertise in China affairs, having served as India’s ambassador to Beijing. Since January 2022, he has been pivotal in the National Security Council Secretariat, reporting directly to NSA Ajit Doval helping India navigate intricate foreign policy challenges.
